Common Sony Faults & Fixes
Sony's proprietary SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) technology delivers the best native contrast in the industry. However, the complex Liquid Crystal on Silicon panels are highly sensitive to heat and humidity over time.
Gamma Drift (Contrast Loss)
The most common issue in VPL-HW and VW models. Over time, the SXRD panels lose their ability to fully block light. Black levels turn grey, and the image looks washed out. We perform advanced software recalibration and optical adjustment.
Colour Uniformity / Tints
If one side of the screen is pink and the other is green, the internal wire-grid polarisers have degraded due to thermal stress. We strip the optical engine to replace the damaged filters and realign the prisms.
Ballast Failure (No Strike)
The projector clicks, but the lamp won't light up (often triggering a 3-blink error). If a new bulb doesn't fix it, the high-voltage ballast unit has blown. We rebuild the ignition coils using component-level soldering.
Cooling & Laser Faults
Modern VPL-XW laser models run incredibly hot. If the intake fans seize or dust clogs the laser heatsink, the unit will thermally throttle and shut down. We perform deep chemical cleaning of the laser light engine.
Note on "White Dots": Unlike Optoma or BenQ DLP projectors, Sony SXRD projectors do not get "White Dots" (Starry Night effect). SXRD panels do not use moving micromirrors. If you see spots on a Sony, it is almost certainly dust inside the sealed optical block, requiring a specialist clean.
Sony Error Code Database
Sony projectors utilise specific blink patterns on the WARNING or STANDBY indicator to communicate hardware faults.
| LED Indicator State | Indicated Fault | Engineer's Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
|
Warning: Flashes 2 Times
|
High Temperature | The internal temperature is unusually high. Ensure the vents are not blocked and the filter is clean. If it persists, an internal thermal sensor or fan has failed. |
|
Warning: Flashes 3 Times
|
Lamp / Cover Error | The lamp has failed to strike, or the lamp cover is not securely attached (triggering the interlock switch). If a new bulb fails, the ballast board requires repair. |
|
Warning: Flashes 4 Times
|
Fan Failure | A cooling fan has seized or the RPM sensor is faulty. The projector shuts down instantly to protect the optical block from melting. |
|
Warning: Flashes 6 Times
|
Electrical System Error | A critical fault on the mainboard or power supply. The unit detects a voltage drop or short circuit and goes into safety lockout. Requires component-level diagnostics. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Sony projector's image look washed out and blueish?
This is a known issue with SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) panels, commonly referred to as 'Gamma Drift' or panel degradation. Over time, heat and humidity cause the panels to lose their ability to block light effectively, ruining black levels and contrast. We can perform optical block refurbishment and software gamma recalibration to restore image depth.
What does it mean when the red Warning light flashes 3 times on my Sony?
A 3-blink sequence typically indicates a lamp failure or an issue with the lamp cover interlock switch. If replacing the lamp (with a genuine Philips/OSRAM bulb) does not fix it, the internal ballast unit has likely failed and requires component-level repair.
Why is my VPL-VW projector displaying a green or magenta tint?
A severe tint across the whole image usually indicates a failure of the wire-grid polarisers within the optical block, or a shift in the panel convergence. We strip the optical engine to realign or replace the degraded polarising filters.
Don't Throw It Away.
Loss of contrast or a flashing red warning does not mean your Sony is dead. A professional optical block refurbishment or mainboard repair costs a fraction of upgrading to a new 4K Laser unit.
